AERO-THERM Application Instructions

AERO-THERM must be applied according to certain principles in order to obtain maximum effect from it. We will be pleased to provide you with specific application advice should you not find the information you need in the following recommendations:

AERO-THERM application methods

AERO-THERM can be applied in 3 ways – by pasting with a grooved trowel, applying with a paint roller or by spraying. Water dilution depends on the method of application. The finished appearance depends on the method of application.

Pasting with a grooved trowel

Pasting with a grooved trowel creates a flat plaster-like appearance. Dust does not settle on this smooth surface. This type of surface is repairable without leaving traces.

As a general guideline, AERO-THERM should be diluted in approximately 5 parts to one, depending on how absorbent the surface to be applied is.

Apply first layer with a grooved trowel (6mm grooves) and then smooth it down with the straight side of the trowel.

This will produce a compact 1mm layer also on uneven walls. Let dry for 12 hours. After drying grind all unevenness with sandpaper.

Before applying the second layer dampen the first layer with water which will prevent fast absorption of water from 2nd layer of AERO-THERM to the already dried 1st layer.

The purpose of the 2nd layer is not to add more material, but to fill in holes, unevenness and defects from the 1st layer. Smooth the 2nd layer after drying with sandpaper again (never use gypsum board grid!).

Application with a paint roller

AERO-THERM is designed primarily for pasting. Using a paint roller is an unusual method. Use a structural foam rubber paint roller.

Application by paint roller will always leave a structured appearance and repairs will be visible. Dilution of material depends on the structure to be created. More water will create a lower, more compact and even structure.

Before application of the second or third coat, dampen the previous coat in order to prevent it from absorbing humidity from the new coat and to keep the same structure. To reach 1mm layer, 2-3 coats are required.

Application with a low-pressure spraying machine.

We strongly recommend using companies certified by us for application by spraying.

Surface preparation before application of AERO-THERM

Flooring and Carpet Protection

Flooring and carpets should be protected prior to applying AERO-THERM on walls and ceilings, as they would normally be before painting.

Preparation of plastered surfaces

Surfaces must be flat, firm and clean, taking care that old layers of paint or plaster which are peeling off are scrapped off and any holes filled-in.

Plastered surfaces and gypsum board

On walls which had only been painted once or twice check adherence of the paint to the surface: wet a small part of the wall and try to scrape it off. If the paint goes off, it has to be removed before applying a primer. If not, a primer can be applied on the wall as it is.

Next (or first in the case of new plasters), surfaces must be sanded down and primed so that the surface soaks in less humidity from AERO-THERM. A primed surface also enables AERO-THERM to dry out gradually and bond with the materials underneath it.

OSB (Oriented Strand Board)

Adherence of AERO-THERM to OSB is very good and it is possible to apply AERO-THERM directly on OSB, whether used as flooring, walls or ceilings.

When boards may open gaps between each other, perhaps due to movement of the structure to which they are attached, it is better, as a precaution, to use plasterboard tape where the boards meet.

AERO-THERM can also be used as a levelling layer to OSB on walls or ceilings. As with plastered surfaces and gypsum boards, OSB surfaces should be primed before applying AERO-THERM.

Application of AERO-THERM on floors

Base preparation under AERO-THERM

The base has to be firm, without roughness that would penetrate through 1mm layer of AERO-THERM and would create thermal bridges. If the base is rough and porous then a self-levelling compound must be applied first to prevent levelling with AERO-THERM.

Before applying AERO-THERM use a primer to strengthen the surface and decrease its absorption.

Apply AERO-THERM with a grooved trowel (6 mm grooves), by roller or by spraying in a 1 mm layer. By pasting and spraying it is possible to make a 1mm layer in one step. Application with roller requires greater dilution in order to prevent forming high structures that are unable to bond. Spraying is a technique with very specific instructions, provided with training.

Dilution of AERO-THERM depends on the absorbency of the base. The aim is to achieve a bond between the product and the base to which it is applied.

Drying time takes approximately 12 hours depending on the temperature of the air and surface and on quantity of water used for dilution.

OSB boards and wooden floors

Big gaps between single boards must be eliminated first. This, and the use of a primer, will reduce the amount of thermal insulation used. Then AERO-THERM can be applied onto a clear, dry and firm surface.

Treating the surface of AERO-THERM

Ceramic paving tiles

Wait until AERO-THERM dries and hardens and apply a coat of primer over it in order to decrease absorbency and then ceramic paving tiles can be glued.

Floating floors

Use impact sound insulation under floating or self-supporting floors.

PVC floors, carpets

Under PVC floors and carpets apply a self-levelling compound in order to protect AERO-THERM against point load.

Base preparation for self levelling compound

Apply a primer on AERO-THERM after it hardens and dries to reduce absorption and provide good adhesion between the self levelling compound and the thermal insulation.

Use only quality leveling compounds which are flexible and have high strength and durability to prevent shrinkage of the levelling compound occuring and affecting the protection provided by AERO-THERM.

Mould elimination before application of AERO-THERM

Any mould present in the surface where AERO-THERM is to be applied must first be eliminated. We recommend using the product range ANSILVER® which is proven in combination with AERO-THERM and is environmentally friendly – can come into direct contact with food.

ASANEX spray contains chlorine and active silver. This product eliminates mould on the surface and bleaches it. Active silver creates a preventive effect.

ANSILVER Profi is a water-soluble powder containing active silver (no chlorine). It is used in low concentrations according to instructions. This product eliminates in-depth mould and stays in the walls after drying out. If the wall gets wet in the future ANSILVER Profi is activated and eliminates the mould.

Surfaces topically covered with mould

  1. Eliminate mould with ASANEX
  2. Wet the paint and scrape off
  3. Apply primer after drying

Large and long-lasting mould

  1. Eliminate mould with ASANEX
  2. Wet the paint and scrape off. Mould could have damaged the paint and decrease its adhesion to the surface. AERO-THERM would not stick to this surface.
  3. Apply ANSILVER Profi twice, diluting according to instructions.
  4. Apply primer after drying.

Other useful tips for application of AERO-THERM

There are some useful tips for application of thermal insulation AERO-THERM.

  • Coverage: 1 Litre = 1 m2 = 1 mm Layer
  • Pasting – 2 layers – 1 litre = 1m2
  • Using paint roller – 2-3 layers – 1 litre = 1m2
  • Spraying – 1 litre = 1m2 (using low-pressure gun)
  • To achieve this coverage, recommended application techniques must be followed.

Recommended Application Conditions

Recommended air and surface temperature during application is +5°C to +65 °C. Drying time depends on air and surface temperature and humidity. Average drying time is 12 hours. High humidity and cold can increase drying time. AERO-THERM will take approximately 2 weeks to reach its final state of dryness and consistency after application.

Transport and storing

Storage temperature should be between +5°C and +25°C. Protect from direct sunshine and high temperatures. Material must not freeze.

Guarantee period – 1 year in original unopened packaging.

Protective aids

When spraying and sanding AERO-THERM use goggles and dust mask or face shield. After work wash hands with warm soapy water, or apply with gloves. In case of contact with eyes wash abundantly with water and seek medical help immediately.

Cleaning tools – all used tools can be washed with water.
